The antagonist of a story, or the villain, is someone who has a diabolical plan towards someone or something. The definition of a villain is, a cruelly malicious person who is involved in or devoted to wickedness or crime; [a] scoundrel (dictionary.com). In the novel, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Roger Chillingworth displays the qualities of being a villain, making him the antagonist of the story. Throughout the story Roger has an ulterior motive and his actions were diabolical, qualifying his as a villain. Although he did not always seem despicable, his character developed into the monstrous man known as Roger Chillingworth.
